Reggae Icon

Jamaica celebrates annually in February, marking each calendar year by paying homage to the legendary Bob Marley. Formerly known as Robert Nesta Marley, he was a Jamaican singer and songwriter born on February 6, 1945, in Nine Mile, St. Ann. Marley was born to a white father and a black mother and spent his early years in the countryside of Nine Mile before moving to the notorious Kingston slum of Trench Town during his early teens.

The Legacy’s on the origin of reggae music

Bob Marley was a true legend and a pioneer of reggae music. He was not just an accomplished artist, but also a psychotherapist who used the soothing power of his music to help heal the collective soul of his nation. Marley’s lyrics and infectious rhythms inspired a new wave of self-empowerment.

Telling people to stand up and fight for what is right, to reject the status quo, and to break down barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential. Throughout his illustrious career, Marley remained true to his roots, music was a reflection of the struggles and triumphs of the Jamaican people.

A revolutionist, creating a positive impact on this generation and the generation before. A pattern that is still being portrayed today after 50 years. His sound incorporated a diffusion of early ska, rock steady, and reggae musical forms that took the world by storm in the 1970s into a rock and roll-influenced hybrid that made him an international superstar. He brought reggae to the forefront of popular music, earning worldwide acclaim and paving the way for future generations to build on his legacy. Without Marley’s contributions, reggae as we know it today simply would not exist.

Bob Marley was also a somewhat political figure and a revolutionary who survived what I thought to be a politically motivated assassination attempt in 1976. His attempts to mediate a truce between the warring political factions of Jamaica resulted in his headlining the infamous “One Love” peace concert in April 1978.

Trench Town, Cultural Yard

His rising fame earned him an invitation to perform at ceremonies commemorating Zimbabwe’s majority rule and internationally recognized independence in 1980. In April 1981, Bob Marley received the Order of Merit from the Jamaican government, but tragically passed away a month later at the age of 36. Forever regarded as the Father of Reggae Music, Bob Marley is not only a global music icon, but he is also a national treasure to the people of Jamaica. Even after his death, his reputation continues to grow.

Bob Marley’s love for music grew while in Trench Town in the early 1960s when he formed a vocal group known as The Wailers with friends Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston, otherwise known as Bunny Wailer. The group quickly rose to stardom with hits like “Catch a Fire” in 1973 and “Exodus” in 1977. Being the product of two very different worlds, Marley would use his experiences from this to inform some of his music in later years. Reggae is still very huge in the international field, and people come from miles around just to visit the Bob Marley Foundation.

““One Love” is a biographical film about the life and music of legendary musician Bob Marley. The movie follows Marley’s journey from his humble beginnings in Jamaica to his rise as an international music icon. The film features interviews with Marley and some of his inspirational words. Bob was always pushing the barrier after his attempted assassination at his studio, Tuff Gong. The movie shows the significant role his wife Rita had played in his life, which, until this day, she still, in my opinion, carries that torch. I have to say the script appeared to be well-crafted and accurate in its portrayal of the subject matter, but with some missing factors.
