had made a substantial contribution to local economies. Many states have begun to legalize it for medicinal and recreational purposes.

The permit for the sale of cannabis at retail shops started booming where recreational use is legal. Researchers still maintained a scientific interest in it, engaging in debates regarding its therapeutic safety or classification as an illegal substance. That is, until newfound experimental proof showed that the plant has medical uses, where it was valued for its medicinal, nutritional, and therapeutic properties, and may have a place in modern society.

In 2016, most states had approved its use for medicinal purposes only. According to the laws and policies of the individual states, persons with evidence of medicinal use status from a doctor could purchase a small quantity from licensed shops. Retail locations have popped up in large numbers in states that allow recreational use, adding to the economies of those states.

The pressure to legalize cannabis in Europe and globally has elicited various responses. In 2018, the United Kingdom legalized cannabis for medical use. In the same year, the World Health Organization started its first scientific assessment of cannabis for medical uses mandated under treaty law. Ireland legalized cannabis for medical use in 2019. France’s 2022 decree approved medical cannabis cultivation, establishing production, distribution, and consumption regulations, while some prohibitions remained.

Cannabis has long been a topic of extensive scientific research, shedding light on potential therapeutic applications and its effects on the human body.
